4 out of 5 stars Pixar Nostalgia At It's Best   September 9, 2010
Xina143 (Culpeper, VA USA)
I will admit, I did not expect much from this game. Based off of the commercials I saw when the little boys are watching Disney Channel I figured it would just be some lame knock off that was being hyped up like crazy. Well, the hype was definitely justified! The game is fun, and not just for little kids. My oldest son picked up the controller to play, and before he knew it an hour passed by! He described it as "strangely addictive". All the boys were laughing and smiling.

Now for the technical stuff: The game is very well done. The graphics are solid, in fact it was sometimes difficult to differentiate between gameplay and clips from the movie. The gameplay was simple, but not too simple. My six year old was able to pick it up and figure it out faster than my sixteen year old. The story is simple; it is sort of a epilogue/re-telling of the movie. BUT it does not feel like you would be bored playing the game after watching the movie. Plus with the Toybox mode you can goof around even after you have beaten the story.

This game was fun and I definitely recommend it to parents of kids who loved any of the movies. I would say that this game is a must buy.

5 out of 5 stars Fun for Kids and Adults   September 9, 2010
Koala1356 (FL, USA)
I am an adult gamer, but not hardcore. I like fun things, and "Toy Story 3 The Video Game" fits into that category perfectly. There are several modes of play, including the two big ones, "Story Mode" and "Toybox Mode".

"Toybox" is the open world sandbox where you are the sheriff of the town. It's your job to do just about everything, including catching bandits, building new businesses, recruiting civilians, and taking missions (quests) from various inhabitants of your town. There is enough here to keep anyone busy for hours.

"Story" is, well, the story. Here you relive and play through scenes from the movie. I confess I have not delved into this too much as yet. I find "Toybox" too much fun!

Being kid-friendly, there are no "deaths" in the game, just endless amounts of respawning when you fail to do something. (IE: unlimited penalty free do-overs). There are also no guns; ammunition is in the form of small colored beach balls, which you toss at the bad guys to knock them out/knock them over. You also use your beach balls to hit targets that need interaction, for example: hitting a target to lower a bridge so you can cross it.

Money is in the form of gold coins, which you can endlessly earn by breaking barrels and crates (they respawn after just a minute or so), or using your pickax to mine gold-flecked rock, or by completing quests and missions. You'll need lots of it to buy new buildings for your town or new toys, but fortunately, it's easy to come by with just a little work.

The control system is well thought out and works well. It's easy to pick up and play, even for kids. Items are scrolled and selected via the D-pad, L2 locks on a target and R2 throws a beach ball. Face buttons preform the other various functions. I recently bought PS3 Dual Triggers to enhance my triggers and I must say that it was an investment well spent. Since Toy Story 3 uses the trigger buttons rather than shoulder buttons, it is a perfect match.

Overall, Toy Story 3 is one of the better "movie games" I have played, and I would recommend it to gamers of all ages, from kids to adult, who just want to have some fun.

5 out of 5 stars Best movie to video game transition ever.   September 9, 2010
J. Storm (The Abyss)
Toy Story 3 is easily the best movie to video game transition ever released. We've owned it for a week, and our entire household has had an absolute blast with it. Our kids love it, and it actually provides real challenges for them that get progressively harder with each level. Some of the challenges can be real frustrating to master, and even us parents have had to try a few spots at least a dozen times before beating them. The nice thing is, if things get too frustrating you can take a break, go goof around in the Toy Box area for a while, and have at it again later on with a fresh start.
Graphically, Toy Story 3 looks wonderful in 1080p HD. The colors are bright and vivid in pretty much every environment, and the depth is amazing, rivaling some of the best I've seen of any game. The frame rate is smooth with very few if any small glitches, and the visuals themselves are just "cartoony" enough to stay true to the childhood endearment of the movie itself.
Most of the levels after the first are a bit too tough for our youngest daughter to play, but she gets enjoyment from exploring the different environments and experimenting, and oftentimes gets rewarded with hidden items or a random trophy for her efforts. It's not very often I can say that about a game on the PS3. This is truly an enjoyable experience for everyone, ages 3 - 83 and beyond. Highly recommended!

4 out of 5 stars I hated it at first.....   September 9, 2010
Morley Dotes (Flushing, New York USA)
.....at first.....it was very simplistic and not challenging and I thought that is all there was....then I started getting into it and saw there was some challenge. My kids love it! They have a great time playing and there is enough difficulty that it keeps them from getting through too easily. There is a variety of gameplay here, from free form type, go where you please, to structured, you must go a certain way kind of mission. There are quest type missions as well as shoot 'em up missions. A little bit for everyone. Some of it is a little lame, but what I think is lame, my daughter thinks is fun. This is a one or two player game. The graphics are great. Nothing ever slows down. It is a simple but fun game and should provide hours of entertainment. This really should be 4.5 stars, but there isn't enough to round up. The only annoying thing, and probably what keeps it from hitting a five is that it does have to stop and load more often than any other game I have (and I have a lot of games, PS3, 360, and Wii). This is a lot of family fun.....buy it and enjoy.

4 out of 5 stars Lots of fun   September 8, 2010
Shala Kerrigan (Anchorage)
My 15 year old daughter told me "I grew up with Toy Story, of course I want to see the new movie." So I thought she might not be too grown up for the game.
I was right. This game isn't really geared for younger kids. Some of the plot and puzzles are too complex. My daughter finds them challenging enough to keep her interested. More of a surprise, my 19 year old son enjoys the game as well.
The animation in the game is very good. Lots of bright, wonderful colors and it does look like the movies. The cut scenes/stories are very well done and fit with the game. In the game you will be trying to achieve various objectives using Woody, Buzz and Jessie. The game play is in "chapters" which take place in different locales. There are chapters in an Old West Town, Andy's home, Buzz's video game and Sunnyside Day Care. Toybox mode is less challenging and just a lot of fun. There are helpful hints in the game to help you get through some of the trickier parts.
Some of the load times can be a little long seeming, and navigating in the cars can be a little difficult but neither of those things are annoying enough to really bother anyone in my family.
You can play Zurg in the PS3 version of the game, and my daughter wants me to add "Don't go through the goo in Zurg's car in the stunt park."

A very fun game overall, everyone in my family can play this one. Even though the game is geared towards older kids, there is nothing that should be objectionable if younger children are watching their siblings play. The adults in the family find it challenging enough to be fun, and it's rapidly become one of my daughter's favorite games.
