Product Description
In a frantic battle to the checkered flag, Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing sees Sonic and friends speed around tracks set in medieval castle ramparts, lush rainforests and bustling cities, all taken from the visually rich and varied universes of Sonic and SEGA. Fan favorites such as Dr. Eggman, Tails, AiAi, Amigo and many more will join Sonic in their custom built vehicles, revving their engines and jostling to stay ahead of the pack. Each character will race around the track in cars, planes, motorbikes, and in AiAi's case - a banana mobile! Secret short cuts, swift handling and avoiding strategically placed obstacles are certainly the best way to get to the top of the podium.

5 out of 5 stars Fun   July 7, 2010

This game is just way too much fun. My girlfriend and I play this game for hours on end. It's simple, easy to understand and can be played by anyone. So if you're into that kind of arcade racing, then you should definitely pick up this title.

5 out of 5 stars Appealing to all ages   May 14, 2010

This game has a wide appeal to all ages. The game play is easy and the trophy list is very easy to hit 100% on the game. My family of 4 enjoys playing it together as well as a friend of mine who is "a gamer". :) Definitely worth picking up.

4 out of 5 stars Fun, but slightly hard   March 28, 2010
D. Peter (ashburn, va)
My son loves this game, but the difficulty for it is a bit extreme. Even on "beginner" setting, it is difficult to break out of last place. All of the eight racers finish within about 10 seconds of each other. I don't know why racing games (especially kid-oriented racers) don't have two or three cars that lag behind the rest and are easier to beat.

4 out of 5 stars Immitation is the highest form of flattery.   March 15, 2010

If you're going to imitate a well proven franchise like Mario Kart, you should take a cue from Sumo Digital's new combat racer Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing. Honestly, this game is so good, the only things I miss are the Nintendo characters. This game was developed by the same people who made newer OutRun games as well as GTI Club on the PSN, so they do know a thing or two about arcade style racers.

20 Sega All-Stars make up the roster here includes primarily of Sonic franchise characters like Sonic, Tails, Eggman, Amy, as well as characters like Ryo Hazuki (Shenmue), Beat (Jet Grind/Set Radio), Akira and Jacky (Virtua Fighter), Ai Ai (Super Monkey Ball), Opa Opa (Fantasy Zone), etc.

The gameplay is smooth and easy. You'll only be using the L1, R1, and X buttons predominantly. R1 used for accelerating and L1 allows you to drift or power slide through rough corners. Much like in modern Mario Kart games, efficient use of power sliding will give you speed boosts therefore giving you an advantage over the competition. The combat aspect of the game comes from the game's standard arsenal of weapons your player can pick up. Missiles, boxing gloves, mines are some of the generic pick ups you can get along with a special "power-up" technique that each of the game's 20 characters can posses. These are like the invincible stars you pick up from the Mario Kart games. Though unlike Mario Kart, these special powers come different forms depending on the characters you pick. For example, Amy whacks around a pink mallet hitting any one on her way or Ryo Hazuki drives his infamous crane from the original Shenmue and pushes off any opponent he touches.

Visually and design-wise, Sumo Digital did a spectacular job with this game. The game has 24 tracks based on locations found in Sega's games. Each track successfully captures the feel of the game it takes inspiration from. For example, the stages from Samba De Amigo are super vibrant with rich colors, the characters you see in the game, and the houses and cacti dancing to the music. Tokyo-To from Jet Set Radio has the same cell shaded style that made the Xbox sequel so iconic in its own right. Curien Manor from the House of the Dead is full of ghouls and monsters that you may recognize from the game. Nor only do the tracks look and are well designed, the game is just downright pretty from a technical standpoint. The game isn't constant 60 frames but the frame rate never dips into unplayable levels. Truth be told this game is the best looking kart racer on the market, and the first one in HD.

Sonic & Sega-All Stars Racing is the best kart racer you'll find on the PS3. It's smooth gameplay with sharp controls make it a Mario Kart knock off that successfully does imitate the iconic series. Oh did I forget to mention that the game has many modes as well as secrets to unlock? Well yeah it does. Play it with a friend or random players, this game is best played in multiplayer. At 50 bucks, there's really no reason to skip this game if you like arcade or kart style racing. It's not the most ground breaking kart racer, but the game feels so right in every aspect.

5 out of 5 stars A fun Kart racer for Sega fans or people who don't own a Wii   March 8, 2010

I hate seeing good products go unappreciated, and that's why I'm writing this review.

I have no doubt in my mind that if the words "Sonic" and "Sega" were replaced by "Mario" and "Nintendo" in the title, this game would have already sold a million copies day one. Apparently brand name is that important to the casual gamer...and that's a shame, because this is a fun, well made game that deserves a chance.

It's not as if the characters are unfamiliar. Sonic, Shadow, Amy Rose, Tails, Knuckles, Dr. Robotnik, Jacky and Akira from Virtua Fighter. Characters from million selling hit games. Just like Mario Kart.

It's not as if the game isn't exciting. It's racing! The controls are responsive and fast. The tracks are anywhere from simple to quirky to challenging. Just like Mario Kart.

It's not as if the game is ugly. Sleek presentation. Very colorful racers and environments. Cute/funny/ridiculous animations. Just like Mario Kart.

It's not as if the game is tough on the ears. The sound effects compliment the action nicely, while you're treated to classic themes that you might recognize from previous games. And, plenty of exaggerated voice samples that range from hilarious to cheesy. Just like Mario Kart.

The game has received solid reviews from gaming websites, casual players around the web, other Amazon reviewers, and now little ol' me. What more does it take to get people to open their minds? Hey, if you squint, Sonic sorta looks a little like Mario...they're both red and blue. Will that do it for you? Will pretending that it's a Mario game actually allow people to forget blind brand loyalty and try something that they will probably enjoy just as much?

Well, whatever you have to do, do it. As long as it lets you let yourself enjoy a good game.
